About the Sacred Heart of Jesus Project

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the cult of the Sacred Heart spread across the globe with the help of the Jesuits. This project seeks to collect images and texts that celebrated (or attacked) the devotion and its associated imagery from the 17th-19th centuries.

The goals of this project are to:

  1. create an archive of texts and image
  2. arrange texts and images by modern-day country to geographically orient them
  3. highlight connections between images of the Sacred Heart

All information on this site relates to ongoing research by Dr. Lauren Kilroy-Ewbank, who has been researching devotion to and images of the Sacred Heart of Jesus since 2003. She has published on this topic in various journals and books.
